About Lismore

The City of Lismore, and the hinterland surrounding it, is known as the “Rainbow Region” – a name which refers to the area's magical richness, extraordinary cultural diversity and its residents’ fondness for natural living.

With a population now over 45,000, Lismore is the commercial and cultural hub of the Northern Rivers, and plays host to the region’s sporting, artistic, theatrical and musical activities, with a busy calendar of regular festivals and events.

The Rainbow Region contains nearly a third of New South Wales’ forest reserves, with some of the most picturesque scenery in the state. The charming historic villages dotted around the Rainbow Region blend traditional rural living with an eclectic, cosmopolitan culture.

Lismore is home to the region’s major services, shopping and sporting facilities making it a drawcard for residents in the surrounding districts, and adding to the cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is also a thriving university town with Southern Cross University attracting over 5,000 students each year.

The city is just a half hour drive from the stunning beaches of Ballina and Byron Bay – the most easterly point in Australia.
